News Summary

Ferrari has confirmed that Dino Beganovic will become a Formula 1 reserve and development driver for the 2027 season, promoting the 22-year-old Swede from its driver academy into the Scuderia’s main racing organisation as fellow junior Rafael Câmara prepares to make his Grand Prix debut with Haas.

The announcement, made on Friday, October 16, represents the next stage of Beganovic’s seven-year relationship with Ferrari. The Swedish-Bosnian driver will conclude his Formula 2 campaign with DAMS before moving into a role that includes simulator work, development activities and availability to replace either regular Ferrari driver when required.

Beganovic will share reserve responsibilities with Antonio Giovinazzi, who already combines his Ferrari commitments with the manufacturer’s endurance programme.

The decision comes immediately after Ferrari secured a Formula 1 race opportunity for Câmara, who will replace Esteban Ocon at Haas in 2027 alongside Oliver Bearman.

While the Brazilian graduates directly to the starting grid, Beganovic will remain closely involved with Ferrari’s Formula 1 development without a confirmed full-time race programme.

Beganovic celebrates promotion: ‘A significant moment in my career’

Beganovic welcomed the announcement as the culmination of several years within Ferrari’s development structure.

“I am pleased to join Scuderia Ferrari HP as Development and Reserve Driver,” he said in a statement published on his official website.

The Swede described the promotion as an important milestone, acknowledging the difference between representing Ferrari as a junior driver and becoming directly involved in its Formula 1 operations.

“This is a significant moment in my career,” he added, explaining that the appointment would allow him to support the team while remaining prepared for a possible racing opportunity.

Beganovic thanked the Ferrari Driver Academy for its contribution to his development and expressed his determination to make the most of the responsibilities entrusted to him.

The appointment also means he will spend more time with Ferrari during Grand Prix weekends, working alongside the engineers and drivers responsible for the team’s 2027 programme.

He is expected to attend several of the remaining races in 2026 while completing his Formula 2 commitments.

Ferrari chooses different F1 paths for Beganovic and Câmara

The contrast between Ferrari’s two leading academy prospects has become one of the most interesting developments in the 2027 driver market.

Haas confirmed Câmara’s multi-year Formula 1 contract on October 15, promoting the Brazilian after consecutive titles in Formula Regional and Formula 3 and an impressive rookie campaign in Formula 2.

Câmara currently leads the championship with Invicta Racing, while Beganovic sits fifth with DAMS after recording victories in Madrid and Baku.

Both have progressed through Ferrari’s junior programme, but their careers have followed different trajectories.

Beganovic joined the academy in 2020 and won the 2022 Formula Regional European Championship. He subsequently spent two seasons in FIA Formula 3, finishing sixth in both, before moving to Formula 2.

Câmara, meanwhile, joined Ferrari’s development programme later and established himself through championship victories in 2024 and 2025.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO detailed in its profile of Câmara’s journey to Formula 1, the Brazilian’s progression included extensive testing with Ferrari and Haas before his promotion was confirmed.

The different appointments underline Ferrari’s ability to provide multiple pathways for its academy graduates. A race seat remains the primary objective for most junior drivers, but reserve and development positions also offer opportunities to gain experience within a Formula 1 organisation.

For Beganovic, the new role provides continuity with Ferrari while keeping open the possibility of future race opportunities.

Beganovic brings four Ferrari practice appearances to reserve role

The Swede already has practical experience of Ferrari’s Formula 1 operation.

He made his first official Grand Prix weekend appearance during the 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix, replacing Charles Leclerc in FP1, and subsequently completed another session in Austria.

Beganovic returned to the cockpit in 2026, replacing Lewis Hamilton during first practice at Barcelona before taking over Leclerc’s car at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The four appearances gave him experience of the team’s procedures, technical systems and the demands of driving contemporary Formula 1 machinery.

Ferrari has also provided additional testing opportunities in previous-generation cars, allowing Beganovic to build mileage outside official race weekends.

The experience will be particularly valuable in his new role, which requires him to remain familiar with the car’s characteristics and prepared to step into a race seat if necessary.

Reserve drivers also contribute to simulator development, helping teams evaluate setup changes and technical updates between events.

Ferrari has faced an increasingly demanding development challenge under Formula 1’s 2026 regulations, with the new power-unit and aerodynamic requirements placing greater emphasis on simulation and correlation between factory work and track performance.

The team has made progress during the season, although Frédéric Vasseur continues to face pressure despite Ferrari moving closer to the front.

Beganovic’s appointment gives Ferrari another driver familiar with its procedures and technical environment as it prepares for 2027.

Ferrari reorganises academy for 2027

Beganovic’s promotion comes as Ferrari makes broader changes to its young-driver programme.

With Câmara moving to Haas and Beganovic entering the reserve structure, the academy has announced new recruits for 2027.

The incoming drivers include Salim Hanna, Alp Aksoy and Daniel Miron, while Tuukka Taponen is expected to progress to Formula 2 after finishing third in the 2026 Formula 3 championship.

The restructuring reflects Ferrari’s attempt to maintain a development pipeline across karting, Formula 4, Formula Regional, Formula 3 and Formula 2.

Beganovic will complete his current Formula 2 season before fully assuming his new responsibilities. The championship is scheduled to conclude with rounds in Qatar and Abu Dhabi, although the Middle Eastern events have remained subject to uncertainty.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO reported following Bruno Michel’s latest comments, Formula 2’s CEO remains determined to complete both rounds rather than end the championship after Azerbaijan.

Beganovic enters those events fifth in the standings, while Câmara leads the title fight ahead of Nikola Tsolov and Alexander Dunne.

Ferrari’s Formula 1 programme will return to action at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on October 23–25, where the team will continue its preparations for the closing stages of 2026. GRANDE PRÊMIO will follow the Scuderia’s development and the 2027 driver market through its Formula 1 coverage.
