News Summary

IndyCar officially confirmed on Friday (October 23) that it will race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on July 18, 2027, marking the American single-seater championship’s return to Europe and establishing its first event in Spain. The announcement was made during a presentation at the Catalan circuit, with the event forming part of the second phase of the 2027 NTT IndyCar Series calendar.

The multi-year agreement brings IndyCar back outside North America for the first time since 2013, when James Hinchcliffe won on the streets of São Paulo, Brazil. It will also mark the return of top-level American open-wheel racing to Europe, which last hosted a Champ Car race at Assen in the Netherlands in 2007.

The inaugural IndyCar Grand Prix of Barcelona will take place at the permanent circuit in Montmeló, near the city where Álex Palou was born. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver secured his fifth IndyCar championship in 2026 and will now have the opportunity to race in front of his home supporters.

“This is a monumental day for our sport,” Penske Entertainment president and CEO Mark Miles said.

Miles confirmed that the series considers Barcelona one of the principal elements of its international expansion strategy, bringing IndyCar to a venue already familiar to audiences of Formula 1 and MotoGP.

IndyCar confirms July 18 date and multi-year agreement with Barcelona

The official announcement concludes negotiations that had intensified in recent months between Penske Entertainment, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and Catalan authorities.

Earlier this week, reports from Spain indicated that a multi-year agreement had been reached, although IndyCar had not formally confirmed the event or announced a precise race date.

That changed on Friday, when the championship confirmed that Barcelona would join the 2027 calendar on Sunday, July 18.

The event will be the centrepiece of the second phase of IndyCar’s 2027 schedule, which is being introduced in stages.

Miles welcomed the opportunity to bring the American championship to one of Europe’s best-known racing circuits.

“We are pleased to be able to take our ultra-competitive brand of wheel-to-wheel racing to Europe and thrilled that we can showcase INDYCAR in Alex Palou’s hometown,” he said.

The Penske Entertainment executive also highlighted Barcelona’s international reputation and the importance of taking IndyCar to a venue with considerable motorsport history.

“We cannot wait to see the NTT INDYCAR SERIES compete at one of the world’s most recognizable motorsports venues set against the backdrop of a very historic and breathtaking international destination like Barcelona.”

The championship has not yet announced the full sporting timetable for the Spanish weekend, including practice sessions, qualifying and the race start time.

Palou welcomes first IndyCar race in his hometown

The arrival of IndyCar in Barcelona will give Álex Palou an opportunity he has never previously experienced in the championship: competing in front of his home supporters.

The 29-year-old was born in Barcelona and began his racing career in Europe before establishing himself in American single-seater competition.

Since joining IndyCar, he has become one of the championship’s most successful drivers, winning five titles in six seasons.

In 2026, Palou secured his fourth consecutive championship, joining Sébastien Bourdais as only the second driver to achieve that feat in the history of top-level American open-wheel racing.

He has also accumulated 25 career victories, placing him joint 17th on the all-time wins list.

Only A.J. Foyt, with seven titles, and Scott Dixon, with six, have won more championships.

Palou welcomed Friday’s announcement and acknowledged the personal significance of racing in Barcelona.

“I’m so excited to be part of INDYCAR’s first race in Barcelona,” the Chip Ganassi driver said.

“It is an amazing opportunity, and it means so much to me to have a race at home in Barcelona, it’s hard to put into words.”

The five-time champion expects strong local support and is already targeting victory at the inaugural event.

“I know the fans are going to love it, and I think we are going to put on a great show. We’re going to try hard with the team at Chip Ganassi Racing to bring home the trophy in July.”

The event will also provide Spanish fans with an opportunity to watch Palou compete in the championship in which he has established himself as one of the most successful drivers of his generation.

IndyCar returns to Europe for first time since 2007

Barcelona’s addition marks an important development in IndyCar’s international calendar.

The championship has not competed outside North America since the 2013 São Paulo Indy 300, the final event of a four-year period in which Brazil hosted races on a temporary street circuit.

Hinchcliffe won that race for Andretti Autosport, finishing ahead of Takuma Sato and Josef Newgarden.

Since then, IndyCar has concentrated its championship events in the United States and Canada.

The series’ previous European appearances took place during the CART and Champ Car eras, before the reunification of American open-wheel racing in 2008.

In 2007, Champ Car visited Assen in the Netherlands, where Justin Wilson won, and Zolder in Belgium, where Sébastien Bourdais claimed victory.

American open-wheel racing also competed at Brands Hatch in the United Kingdom and at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz in Germany during earlier seasons.

The Barcelona event will therefore be the first European race for the unified IndyCar championship and the first event held in Spain.

The agreement forms part of Penske Entertainment’s efforts to expand the championship’s audience beyond North America.

Barcelona adds IndyCar as Formula 1 skips circuit in 2027

Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya opened in 1991 and has hosted major international championships for more than three decades.

The permanent road course has been a regular Formula 1 venue, including the Spanish Grand Prix, and has also staged MotoGP, international endurance racing and numerous junior-category competitions.

Its combination of fast corners and technical sections makes it one of the most familiar testing and racing venues in European motorsport.

The arrival of IndyCar coincides with Barcelona’s absence from the Formula 1 calendar in 2027.

Under the agreement governing the Spanish venue’s Formula 1 future, Barcelona will rotate its Grand Prix dates with Spa-Francorchamps, hosting races in 2028, 2030 and 2032.

The new Formula 1 race in Madrid will continue separately under its own contract.

Barcelona’s IndyCar event will therefore give the circuit another major international single-seater championship during a season in which Formula 1 is not scheduled to visit Montmeló.

As GRANDE PRÊMIO reported earlier this week, negotiations to bring IndyCar to Barcelona had progressed significantly before the official announcement.

Friday’s confirmation establishes the event’s date and multi-year status, replacing the uncertainty surrounding the negotiations.

Circuit officials welcome major addition to Barcelona calendar

Pau Relat, chairman of the boards of Fira de Barcelona and Fira Circuit, welcomed the agreement and emphasised its significance for the venue’s long-term development.

“The arrival of INDYCAR is a major milestone and an exciting challenge for the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya,” Relat said.

The circuit executive explained that the agreement would strengthen Barcelona’s position among international motorsport venues and attract new audiences.

“Bringing one of the most prestigious and spectacular championships in global motorsport to our venue strengthens our international positioning, connects us with new audiences and markets, and reinforces our strategy of diversifying the circuit’s activity through world-class events.”

Relat also confirmed that the circuit intends to develop the IndyCar Grand Prix as a recurring international event rather than a one-off appearance.

“We are working with a long-term vision to make INDYCAR Grand Prix of Barcelona a benchmark event on the international racing calendar for years to come.”

The agreement follows the circuit’s recent expansion into other international competitions, including the World Endurance Championship.

Barcelona hosted a WEC round in October, adding another major event to its racing programme.

IndyCar’s arrival will further diversify the venue’s activities during the European motorsport season.
