The Moto2 British GP delivered all the elements of a classic race and a maiden winner. Filip Salač captured his first victory in the category after an extremely chaotic finish, passing Iván Ortolá in the final corners on Sunday (9), while Alex Escrig reached the podium for the first time.

Daniel Holgado finished in fourth position, followed by Izan Guevara, Alonso López, Daniel Muñoz, Denis Öncü, Barry Baltus, and Sergio García, rounding out the top ten.

Championship leader Manuel González was on the verge of taking the win, but celebrated a lap early and dropped down the order on the final tour, crossing the line in 14th place.

How the Moto2 race unfolded at Silverstone:

The riders lined up for 17 laps at the Moto2 British GP anticipating a competitive race at Silverstone. Izan Guevara maintained the lead off the line with a strong start, but had to absorb early pressure from Alonso López.

López mounted an attack at Turn 3 and briefly completed the pass, but ran wide shortly after, allowing Guevara to reclaim the spot. Iván Ortolá also started strong and stayed tucked up behind the lead pair.

Tony Arbolino provided the highlight of the opening lap, carving up seven positions to move into sixth. At the other end, Manuel González lost five spots from his grid position and dropped to ninth. Meanwhile, Colin Veijer suffered a crash at Turn 12 and was forced to retire.

Daniel Holgado began making moves through the field and, at the start of lap four, put the squeeze on López for second place. The Spaniard completed the pass, leaving Ortolá and Daniel Muñoz in his wake.

David Alonso, on the other hand, continued to drop back. The Colombian closed out lap five down in 20th position, running 2m05.090s while the lead pack was lapping in the 2m02s range. Alonso was later handed a penalty.

At the end of lap five, González pulled off a brilliant double pass on Arbolino and López to snatch fourth place. The championship leader lost the position shortly after when he made a small mistake, allowing López to retake fourth. Up front, Guevara held a 0.2s margin over Holgado, with Ortolá keeping them in sight.

With ten laps remaining, Guevara, Holgado, and Ortolá backed off the pace to conserve their tires. Arbolino and Filip Salač, running fifth and sixth, took advantage to bridge the gap, while González remained right on the tail of the leaders, just 0.7s off Ortolá.

The race dynamic shifted on lap nine. After a brief lull in the final sector, Holgado spotted an opening and lunged up the inside of Guevara to take the lead with authority. Shortly after, Aaron Canet crashed out at Turn 15.

At the start of lap 11, Ortolá capitalized on Guevara’s fading pace to pass the Spaniard for second. Arbolino made progress as well, closing in on the leaders. Displaying strong race pace, the rider on the #14 bike exploited the scrap for the lead to insert himself into contention for the victory.

Lap 12 brought even more action. Ortolá swept into the lead at Turn 1, but Holgado countered immediately to reclaim the position. The scrap began drawing in more riders, and Arbolino made a huge charge in the final sector to pass Holgado for the lead.

With five laps to go, the win was completely up for grabs. On lap 13, González executed a great move around the outside of Ortolá, while Holgado got back ahead of Arbolino. However, seconds later, the Italian slid out at Turn 14, ending what had been one of his best performances of the season.

Over the final three laps, the fight for the win boiled down to Holgado, González, Ortolá, and Salač. The Czech rider joined the lead battle and, in sector one of lap 15, made a move on Ortolá to break into the podium spots.

González looked far more composed on his bike than Holgado and began putting heavy pressure on the lead. On lap 16, the championship leader squeezed past the Spaniard in sector one, but Holgado responded and snatched the lead back before starting the final lap.

However, the contest took a bizarre turn on the final lap. González celebrated victory thinking he had taken the checkered flag, dropping several positions as a result, while Holgado lost momentum and fell off the podium. This opened the door for Salač and Ortolá to fight it out for the win.

The Czech rider managed to fend off the attacks from the #4 bike through the final corners to cross the line in first place. In doing so, Salač earned the first Moto2 victory of his career. Ortolá finished second, while Alex Escrig rounded out the podium for his first rostrum in the class. Holgado finished down in fourth, while González endured a dramatic final lap to cross the finish line in 14th, having fought directly for the win just moments earlier.
