Aston Martin confirmed on Tuesday (29) that Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll have extended their contracts and will continue as its Formula 1 drivers. The announcement settles the team’s 2027 line-up, although Aston Martin described the agreements as long-term without disclosing an end date for either one.

The decision keeps Alonso and Stroll together for a fifth consecutive season. Aston Martin said their racing experience and technical feedback remain important as it develops its car through the rest of 2026 and prepares for the following years.

Stroll joined the Silverstone-based organisation in 2019, when it competed as Racing Point, and will enter his 11th F1 season in 2027. Aston Martin credited the Canadian with more than 200 Grand Prix starts and three podium finishes.

“I’m very happy to continue with Aston Martin Aramco for the long term. I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team. There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me. I know we are heading in the right direction, and my commitment is stronger than ever to help us achieve our goals,” Stroll said.

Alonso says he took time to decide his F1 future

Alonso joined Aston Martin in 2023. The two-time world champion’s future beyond 2026 had remained open while he considered whether to continue racing. In its announcement, the team said he had contested 85 Grands Prix for Aston Martin, taking eight podiums, including two second-place finishes.

The Spaniard said he did not rush the decision. He also made clear that his motivation to race and his belief in Aston Martin’s project were central to signing the extension.

“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One™ Team. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level. I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed. I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities. I look forward to making more memories on the race track in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special,” Alonso said.

The renewal gives Aston Martin continuity at a point when the team is working to improve its performance. Its speed deficit in Baku raised questions ahead of the next race at Sepang, while the contracts confirm who will drive its cars as that development continues into 2027.

Lawrence Stroll backs continuity at Aston Martin

Executive chairman Lawrence Stroll said retaining both drivers gives the organisation valuable experience as it works toward its longer-term goals. He acknowledged that improving the car’s performance remains the immediate priority.

“Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team. Having two drivers with their level of experience, commitment and knowledge provides tremendous value to the whole organisation. We are here to win, and whilst our short-term focus remains on improving performance, I believe we have the world-class talent we need to achieve our long-term objectives,” Lawrence Stroll said.
